Shopping list

Yes, it’s my third post of the night. I’ve got more than a week to make up for. But as the title suggests, here’s my shopping list:

2 zucchinis – I have the seeds to start my own, but I should have started them a couple weeks ago. And anyway, I only want two.
Spiderplant – I [...]

Plant Sales

Saturday was the Friends of the National Arboretum Plant Sale at (gasp!) the National Arboretum. My best friend and I headed down there, and not so surprisingly, we didn’t wander around the Arboretum much (okay, not at all). We headed straight for the sale. And we bought plants. And then we headed back to Baltimore, [...]

Well, I came back from gorgeous weather in Florida to not so nice weather in Maryland. Saturday was nice, but since then it’s been pretty much all rain, so I haven’t been able to get out in the garden and do any of the things I need to do. There wasn’t any rain today and [...]

Crossing my fingers

Tomorrow, I’m going away on a road trip to visit family in Florida. I don’t really want to go, but there’s no graceful way for me to get out of it – and I’ll probably enjoy myself anyway. I’ll be gone a week though and I don’t really trust my uncle to keep my seedlings [...]

Jealousy

My best friend lives about 30 miles from me, in a city. She’s also closer to the coast and farther from the mountains than I am. Therefore, her frost free date is right about now. And I’m jealous that she gets to plant things and I get to continue to look at mostly empty garden [...]

Ouch

I pruned back the rose that’s been up by the swingset for at least 50 years. It had been running rampant for at least the last 20, so I was probably more severe on it than I should have been. All I know about it at this point is that it was originally a Jackson [...]

Herbicidal Maniac

My cat ate my seedlings. Specifically my broccoli seedlings which had been moved from their safe, cat-free room to begin hardening off. The whole time I was downstairs in the room with the seedlings, he left them alone. I went up to bed and then came back down in the morning to find them all [...]

I started the last of my indoor seeds (except the zucchini – that’s next week) the other day. I use peat pellets in a tray with a plastic cover. I do have two very sunny, south-facing windows in my old bedroom, so that’s where I start them. And once I actually have seedlings, they go [...]

Herb Inventory

I figured it was time to transplant my herbs, since the bed they’re in doesn’t get quite enough sunlight. I’ve got onion chives, french and english thyme, regular and golden sage, variegated peppermint, hidcote and munstead lavender, french tarragon and greek oregano. Oh, and rosemary.
I didn’t do anything in particular to protect any of the [...]
